Fulham close in on agreement for Alvaro Arbeloa

The West London side are finalising a deal for Arbeloa to replace Marco Silva, following the latter’s departure from Craven Cottage for Benfica.

Arbeloa is a free agent after leaving Real Madrid this summer, following a six-month period as interim manager of the Spanish side.

The 43-year-old has emerged as the top target for Fulham despite talks with several candidates.

Fulham spoke with representatives of Frank Lampard, Ange Postecoglou, Thomas Frank and Kieran McKenna, though the latter duo informed the Cottages of their desire to take a break from football.

Fulham also approached ex-Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, though the Portuguese coach ruled himself out of the running. Amorim is in talks about taking over at AC Milan.

Talks with Arbeloa are at an ‘advanced stage’ according to the BBC, in what would mark a return to the Premier League for the Spaniard. Arbeloa had spells at Liverpool and West Ham during his playing career.
