16 athletes advance in the girls' Happy State Bank Athlete of the Year voting

Beginning in September, the Amarillo Globe-News recognized some of the top high school performances by soliciting nominations and naming finalists for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week.

Weekly voting lasted throughout the school year and produced 35 Athletes of the Week.

Now, readers will have a chance to choose from those honorees to name a Happy State Bank Fan Favorite High School Athlete of the Year.

Voting will be broken down over multiple weeks beginning June 1 and will run Monday through Thursday each week, alternating weeks between boys finalists and girls finalists.

The 16 athletes who receive the most votes this week will advance to the second round of voting.

Kelton's McKinzi McManus (2,984) leads voting after one week, followed by Hereford's Mia Gomez (2,696) and Vega's Khloe Griffitt (2,438).

The eight athletes with the most votes from the second week advance to the final week of voting.

Voting totals will reset each week.

The athletes represent schools of every size across the area.

Each athlete is listed in order of votes received in the first round of voting. The next round of voting for Happy State Bank girls high school athlete of the year will begin Monday, June 22. The second round of the Happy State Bank boys high school athlete of the year will begin Monday, June 15.
