The moment that the Grand Rapids Griffins were opting to roll with Michal Postava over Sebastian Cossa as their go-to goalie for the AHL Calder Cup playoffs, it just felt like the sands of time on Cossa’s days as a Detroit Red Wings prospect had almost run out.

Nothing has happened since the end of the Grand Rapids season to suggest that Cossa’s departure from the Detroit organization isn’t imminent. Cossa trade rumors are everywhere.

Speculation on Monday that a Cossa trade to the Edmonton Oilers was imminent would prove to be a false flag. Tuesday, a more credible source took to social media, suggesting that sleeping on Cossa rumors may be foolhardy.

NHL insider Kevin Weekes, himself a former NHL netminder, acknowledged that there is plenty of Cossa scuttlebutt reverberating throughout the league. Weekes even added another club to the list of potential NHL destinations.

“I’m told G Cossa could be on the move with [the Utah Mammoth] among the interested clubs,” Weekes posted on his X account.

Edmonton a logical destination for Red Wings prospect

On the surface, the Cossa to Edmonton speculation makes a lot of sense. The netminder is from Alberta. He played his junior hockey with the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Oilers are also in desperate need of goaltending help. And even though Cossa, chosen 15th overall by Detroit in the 2021 NHL entry draft, has only played one NHL game, he’s been an all-star at the AHL level.

Gerry Johansson from The Sports Corporation (TSC) recently appeared on the show of Oilers radio analyst Bob Stauffer. Johansson is Cossa’s agent.

Naturally, the subject of his Red Wings prospect client came up in the conversation.

“You do have to stay patient,” Johansson told Stauffer. “But there’s no question that Cossa, in our mind, is top shelf.”

With Cossa, Postava, QMJHL goalie of the year Rudy Guimond, Carter Gylander, and Michal Pradel, the Red Wings are deep in goaltending prospects.
