The Wisconsin Badgers had been doing some major damage in the 2027 class, but one position that remained a big goal was safety. The Badgers had already landed three-star Dustin Roach and three-star DJ Davis earlier in the spring, but they wanted a third player to fill out the room and add to a loaded class.

Well, on Tuesday, that happened as three-star Texas safety James Roberson committed to the Badgers, he announced. Roberson, a 6’0, 195-pound safety, had been on a visit to Madison this weekend after a visit to TCU last weekend. He was also scheduled to visit Mississippi State this upcoming weekend, but elected to commit to Wisconsin after a visit.

Roberson was one of the most recruited safeties in the country, racking up 35 offers, including ones from Auburn, Miami, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, and others. Wisconsin jumped into the mix back in January with an offer and then had the safety on campus during the spring for an unofficial visit before scheduling the official for this past weekend.

Heading into the month, the Badgers had a couple of options for that third safety spot, with Roberson being the first to visit campus. Wisconsin was also looking at four-star Cooper Onmacht and three-star Caleb Cooper, but both went off the board this weekend, with the former committing to Kansas State and the latter committing to Penn State.

That made it imperative that the Badgers close on Roberson, which safeties coach Jack Cooper did, to nail their third safety in the 2027 class.

Roberson becomes the 22nd commit in quite a strong 2027 class for the Badgers. Wisconsin is ranked inside the top 15, and they’re still looking to potentially add another player or two to the class.
