Scituate boys lacrosse ends perfect season with D-IV championship

It's a perfect season for Scituate High School's boys lacrosse team, which exacted its revenge on Rogers High School in a 15-4 thumping of the Vikings. Last year, the Spartans finished the regular season undefeated before suffering a heartbreaking loss in the final to Rogers. With most of that team returning this season, the Spartans had one clear objective in mind: to plant their flag as Division IV champions.
“This was great, especially compared to last year, when we lost in the state final,” Scituate senior captain Caden Gurjian said. “To come back out here and finish the job, it feels great.”
Finishing the job was the goal for the Spartans this season. They were determined to right the wrongs of the 2024-2025 season and erase that lone blemish across the last two seasons.
Gurjian was one of three Scituate players who finished with three goals; the other two were senior captains Brady Scanlon and Grant Bailey. Gurjian is a captain himself and is proud of the work he and his team put in this season. Despite steamrolling their way through the season, the Spartans never got ahead of themselves, including after they went up 8-1 at halftime.
“We always like to say ‘What’s the score?’ and then we chant 0-0,” Gurjian said. “We are always going to come with the mindset that we’re never actually up. We just keep fighting, keep our heads down, and play hard.”
That mentality of a 0-0 game or always playing like you’re trailing is something Scituate preaches every day. Their coach, Pete Kelleher, made that clear.
“Every timeout, every quarter, every half we ask what’s the score, and the team answers 0-0,” Kelleher said. “We’re out to play our game, and we don’t keep up with the score until it’s over, and that just keeps it fresh.”
Kelleher also believes that the 15 seniors on this Scituate squad look forward to the future success of this team.
“The upperclassmen have this goal to get the underclassmen in, and we do that when we get to a running clock,” Kelleher said. “They’re just as excited for these underclassmen to carry on what they did. They’re all a bunch of brothers. It’s a fun community to be a part of.”
This group from Scituate have been playing lacrosse together since they were little, and, according to Kelleher, many of them live in the same neighborhoods. It’s clear from the on-field results of the last two seasons that this team knows what works for them, and they have made it a problem for the rest of Division-IV lacrosse, winning 31 games over two years and losing just once.
Kelleher’s Spartans aren’t done either; he believes that this program has a bright future.
“For the first time in the 21 years of this program, we had a JV team … and by the way, we were able to put goals up, and we unloaded the bench almost every single game,” Kelleher said. “So we’re ready to go; they won’t be walking into this having never stepped on the field before, and from what I understand, we have seven or eight eighth graders coming up that play rec ball.”
Kelleher added that the program has grown tremendously over the last four years, going from just 14 players four years ago to now a roster of 40.
As for Rogers, it was a deflating loss as the Vikings went down just 90 seconds into the game and already trailed 3-0 before Rocky Ramsey scored their first goal with 4:02 left in the first quarter. Ramsey would score again early in the fourth quarter, but by then the Vikings had fallen behind 14-2. Quinn Green and Luke Mathews also found the back of the cage for the Vikings, while Green and Jayvian Perez added an assist each.
A year ago, Rogers shocked Rhode Island with their upset of Scituate in the championship. This season Scituate and Rogers would play each other three times, all of which ended in victory for the Spartans.
