Boston Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy had plenty of praise for Payton Tolle after his start on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.

Tolle took the mound as Boston was looking to even up the series, and the left-hander was dominant. The left-hander was able to limit the Orioles offense as he went six innings, allowing zero runs on seven hits, while he struck out five.

It was a stellar outing from Tolle to propel Boston to a 6-1 win, which impressed Tracy.

“He was fantastic,” Tracy said postgame on Wednesday about Tolle. “It’s incredible isn’t it? Sometimes, it’s first-pitch fastball and it looks like they’re sitting on it and they’ll foul it back and miss. The ability to get that kind of extension — the ball just jumps on you and keeps carrying and it’s hard to square it up. I don’t have any other explanation than that. But he’s got big stuff.

“The two-seam has helped, too — the ability to run one up and away and also go straight with the four-seam. So he’s got different variations of the fastball now. He’s special."

Although Tracy was impressed with Tolle, the outing did get off to a rocky start, as he threw 25 pitches in the first inning, due to a leadoff walk and a one-out single. But, Tolle was able to escape the jam and pitch a scoreless outing.

After the performance, Tolle is now 3-2 with a 2.28 ERA in eight starts as he’s a huge part of Boston’s rotation.

The Red Sox will look for the series win against the Orioles on Thursday at 1:35 p.m. ET.
