Liverpool ready to abandon England star for much cheaper option

Liverpool are reportedly ready to abandon the idea of having one England star in their squad.

Liverpool have an awful lot of work to do. Arne Slot has left the club and it creates a lot of uncertainty right ahead of the transfer window.

A difficult transfer window, too, as many deals must be sorted pre-World Cup or wait for the tournament to finish. Liverpool now need to figure out what they're doing next season with that restriction.

But it seems clear that Liverpool will try to sign a midfielder. It's the one area they didn't really touch in 2025, while Curtis Jones continues to be linked with a move away.

However, the Reds don't appear to be going all-out on a new midfield option. The Daily Mail reports that they like the idea of Adam Wharton but that they're also ready to sign a cheaper option.

Crystal Palace certainly won't sell on the cheap, especially after a successful season in Europe. The suggestion, then, is that Liverpool maybe aren't looking for a regular starter in midfield.

Instead, it sounds as though they're chasing more of an option to boost the squad. But then Slot's sacking also means the plans might change there.

As things stand (stood?), Liverpool aren't necessarily looking to go all-in on Wharton and could settle for a cheaper squad option. We'll see if that changes but it certainly sounds like the big-money spending will be elsewhere.

Adam Wharton: Situation Summary

Crystal Palace Campaign and Stats

As of 31 May 2026, Adam Wharton has concluded an historic domestic campaign with Crystal Palace. The 22-year-old English midfielder played a pivotal role for the Eagles, helping secure the club's silverware triumph in the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on 27 May. Across a demanding season, Wharton registered 2,562 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League, chipping in with one goal and providing five assists to anchor Palace's midfield engine room.

Transfer Rumours and United Interest

Wharton's stellar performances in European and domestic competitions have naturally put him on the radar of several elite clubs ahead of the summer window. Manchester United have heavily linked themselves with the talented playmaker as Michael Carrick looks to rebuild his midfield options. While United officials admire his progressive passing profile, any potential suitors will need to present an astronomical offer to tempt Crystal Palace into selling their prized asset.
