Aaron Leon, who had a hat trick against Lincoln of Seattle a day earlier in a 3-0 Eastmont win in the state semifinals, continued his red-hot pace, scoring another hat trick against Sumner. All three of Leon’s goals (‘47, ‘61, ‘88) came in the second half and Eastmont won, 3-1.

Sumner’s Aiden Vannoy scored the team’s lone goal in the 88th minute.

Eastmont was untouchable in the state tournament, beating Puyallup in the state tournament opening round, 7-1, followed by a 3-1 win over Mount Si in the quarterfinals and a 3-0 win over Lincoln of Seattle in the semis.

Sumner’s second-place finish is the program’s best finish ever in the state tournament. Craig Johnson’s eighth-seeded Spartans had a memorable run through the bracket, beating No. 9 Lewis and Clark in the opening round, 4-1, before knocking out top-seeded Stadium in the quarterfinals, 3-1, and beating Newport in a penalty kick shootout in the semifinals on Friday.

It’s been a historic year for Sumner High School athletics. The baseball team won the 4A state championship on Saturday evening in Everett, beating Gonzaga Prep, 7-0. The football team won its second consecutive 4A state title last fall, and the girls basketball team played in the 4A state championship game, falling to Davis.
