The state track and field finals for all four divisions were held on Saturday, May 30, with Gaylord athletes traveling to Hawkeye Stadium in Hamilton, Mich. while St. Mary and JoBurg athletes were in attendance at Baldwin Middle School in Hudsonville, Mich. The best of the best from Gaylord area high schools were on display, and they represented their schools well at the final meets of the season.
Of the six Gaylord athletes in attendance at the D2 state finals, sophomore Calvin Cosby had the most impressive performance. Despite suffering a sprained ankle within weeks of the state meet, Cosby finished second overall in the D2 pole vault finals after clearing 14 feet, 4 inches.
Cosby broke the school record in pole vault (15 feet, 3 inches) back on May 11, a height that would've been good for first at the state finals meet. Cosby will be a name to watch as a potential addition to Gaylord's wall of state champions in his final two years as a high school athlete.
Senior Lillian Mason finished her career with a new personal best time in the 200-meter run (26.46 seconds), finished 18th in the 100-meter prelims (12.87 seconds), placed 16th in the pole vault (10 feet, 3 inches) and helped the 400-meter relay team (Mason, Ivy Roberts, Olivia Reiter, Breona Clement) finish 18th (50.80 seconds).
Sophomore Jimmy Jorgenson set a personal best in the 100-meter with a time of 11.12 seconds. Senior Ivy Roberts finished seventh in the high jump after clearing 5-2 and 31st in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.90 seconds.
At the Division 4 finals, JoBurg junior Danielle Agren placed 21st in the 3200-meter run with a time of 13 minutes, 26.56 seconds, while junior Harlie Fox set a new personal best in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:49.32.
The St. Mary 400-meter relay team of Sheridan Cook, Aspyn Campbell, Paisley Kirkby and Kaylee Jeffers placed 30th with a time of 54.73 seconds.
