Matthew Stafford understands why Rams took Ty Simpson: 'I'm not 25 years old'

Matthew Stafford wasn’t blindsided by the Los Angeles Rams’ decision to draft Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick. That’s partly because the Rams gave him a heads-up, talking to the veteran quarterback before the draft to let him know their intentions.

He’s also not naive to the fact that he’s getting older and the team has to start planning for life after he retires. He spoke to reporters Thursday about the Rams’ decision to take Simpson, and while he didn’t disclose what he and Sean McVay talked about, he did acknowledge that he understands the pick.

“I’m not going to get into what our conversation was. I appreciate him talking with me about those things. We have constant dialogue and a great relationship, so I appreciate that,” Stafford said. “I understand where the team’s coming from. Listen, I’m not 25 years old and I get that. We’re doing everything we can to be as good a football team as we can for now, for the future, for all of it.”

As he said on the “Pat McAfee Show” this week, Stafford said his primary job is to help the Rams win games. But at the same time, he’s doing what he can to help Simpson along and answer any questions he may have.

“My job first and foremost is to get myself and our team ready to play as best as I possibly can,” he said. “He’s a part of that team. We’re in a unique position in that we play the same position, I have a ton of experience and he’s just now starting his journey as an NFL player. He’s a guy that asks questions. I’ve been trying to answer those as honestly and as thoroughly as I possibly can.”

Stafford signed an extension with the Rams that keeps him under contract through 2027, and though he’s not certain he’ll play next year, he is keeping the door open. That means Simpson will have to wait an extra year to play, but the Rams drafted him knowing Stafford could play two or more seasons.

For the time being Stafford is trying to win another ring, while simultaneously helping Simpson develop into an NFL quarterback.
