Alabama Football’s Kalen DeBoer Embracing the Pressure as Year 3 Arrives in Tuscaloosa

There’s pressure at Alabama. There always has been, and there always will be.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a player, an assistant coach, or the head coach following the greatest dynasty college football has ever seen.
Every move is watched.
Every decision is questioned.
Every loss feels like the end of the world, and every win still somehow comes with criticism attached to it.
That’s just Alabama football.
And honestly, listening to Kalen DeBoer talk at SEC Spring Meetings this week, you can tell he understands that better now than ever before.
When DeBoer was asked if it feels like he’s already been at Alabama for 10 years because of everything that comes with the job, his answer felt real, honest, and grounded.
“(Laughs) You know what, it has gone fast,” DeBoer said. “But there’s been a lot that has happened, I think, to speak to your question. I’ve enjoyed the journey, and how far we’ve come, and the challenges that are in front of us.”
That response stood out to me because it didn’t sound like someone overwhelmed by the pressure.
It sounded like someone embracing it.
And that matters.
Too many people outside this program still act like DeBoer is just trying to survive at Alabama. But the more he speaks, the more it feels like he truly understands what makes this place different. He understands the expectations. He understands the microscope. But more importantly, he sounds like someone who genuinely loves coaching at Alabama.
“And just, when you have great people around you, and I feel like I have that with our staff, just continue to add,” DeBoer said. “And yeah, there’s people that move on. And we had some coaches that got great opportunities.”
That’s another thing people forget. Alabama has gone through a lot of transition over the last couple of years.
Coaching staffs changed.
Players left.
New faces arrived.
That’s not easy anywhere, especially not at a place where national championships are the standard every single season.
But instead of sounding frustrated about turnover, DeBoer sounded energized by the people now around him.
“I’m excited about an Adrian Klemm, working with our offensive line, a Rich Owens, and Derrick Nix working with our receivers. Rich working with our tight ends. I got great people around me.”
You can hear the confidence growing.
And honestly, I think that’s one of the biggest signs Alabama football is heading in the right direction under DeBoer.
Because at the end of the day, this is still Alabama. The pressure will never disappear. The expectations will never lower. Saturdays in Bryant-Denny Stadium will always carry weight.
But DeBoer sounds like a coach who embraces exactly what comes with that.
“When you’re in the building and you’re with the players and you’re doing what you love to do, and that’s coach football and bring people together, and on Saturdays, go out there and just be in stadiums that have 100,000 people,” DeBoer said. “That’s what we signed up for, and that’s what you love to do.”
That doesn’t sound like a coach running from pressure.
That sounds like a coach built for Alabama.
And somehow, even with everything that’s happened already, it’s hard to believe this is only Year 3.
