The Americans downed Austria 4-1 Tuesday to earn fourth place in Group A with 11 points, one point ahead of Moritz Seider’s German squad. The Canadians downed Czechia 3-2 to finish first in Group B.
Thursday’s USA vs. Canada match is at 10:20 a.m. on NHL Network. The Americans are the defending World Champions and the Olympic champion. But Matthew Tkachuk is only U.S. Olympic team member competing in this tournament.
The Canadian team has Sidney Crosby, Macklin Celebrini, John Tavares and Ryan O’Reilly among others. The Americans have a less experienced roster.
Sweden Makes Medal Round
Meanwhile, Detroit’s Lucas Raymond set up the game-winning goal by Ivar Stenberg in Sweden’s 4-2 win against Slovakia. That win give Sweden fourth place in Group B. Raymond, Albert Johansson and his fellow Swedes will meet Switzerland in their quarterfinal on Thursday.
Earlier Tuesday, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard’s overtime goal gave Norway a 4-3 win against in Denmark. That earned Norway second place in Group. The Norwegians will be Eduards Tralmaks’ Latvia team Thursday in the quarterfinal.
Detroit defenseman Justin Faulk, USA’s captain, played 20 minutes against Austria. He didn’t pick up any points, but he had four shots on goal.
Red Wings prospect Max Plante was a healthy scratch for the Americans. Cam Talbot was the backup goalie for Canada. Detroit rookie Emmitt Finnie was a healthy scratch.
