Steelers Predicted to Cut Ties With Recently Drafted QB For Aaron Rodgers Reason

· Yahoo Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in some quarterback controversy, despite re-signing Aaron Rodgers over the weekend. The hope is that Rodgers will stay healthy throughout the entire 2026-27 season, giving the Steelers an opportunity to not only make the playoffs but possibly win a Super Bowl.

To say the Steelers are Super Bowl favorites would be unfair, but Pittsburgh has typically found ways to win, and until it doesn't, we should trust the organization to at least be in a position to make the postseason.

However, if Rodgers gets injured, there's definitely a lot to talk about, and those problems could hinder the Steelers' chances of making the playoffs.

Better yet, it will probably require a guy to be cut or traded, as Pittsburgh now has four quarterbacks on its roster. According to Mike Florio, the guy who will likely be left out is Will Howard, the Ohio State product.

"I think Will Howard's going to be the odd man out, unless someone gets injured,” Florio said Monday on his “Pro Football Talk” podcast, H/T Steelers Depot. "You've got four guys. You need four guys for now. Go ahead, give him an opportunity... The thing that helps Mason Rudolph is, if Aaron Rodgers gets injured, who do you want to step in and play right away?

"If Aaron Rodgers gets a concussion check, if Aaron Rodgers does anything that keeps him out of the game, they need Mason Rudolph because he's the guy that can walk right in and play. You're otherwise rolling the dice with guys who have never played before... Rudolph's the guy who plays in a pinch, Allar's the guy you're building for the future, Howard's the guy who's gonna be cut or traded."

Howard is in that weird position where he didn't get a chance to play last year and prove that he has anything in the tank, to probably be cut or at least be put on the practice squad.

Because the Steelers took Allar in the third round this year, there's an expectation that he's at least going to be on the roster. Perhaps Mason Rudolph is the guy who gets moved on from, but as Florio touched on, Pittsburgh would have no other quarterback with experience in the NFL on its roster if it goes in that direction.
