Many assumptions have been that Brandon Aiyuk will play for the Washington Commanders in the 2026 NFL season.
That would first require the San Francisco 49ers to make a move, though, and as of mid-May, nothing has happened yet.
There's no way to even know for sure if the Commanders rumors are true if the 'Niners don't first allow Aiyuk to take his next steps.
As things stand, he's still under contract with the 49ers -- but they clearly aren't going to bring him back onto the field in their uniform. They're just waiting things out.
Earlier this offseason, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on the two problems here.
"The Commanders have interest but they're waiting for the 49ers to cut him," Rapoport shared first.
Then the counterpart problem: "The 49ers don't wanna cut him because they know the Commanders are interested."
And one more detail from Rapoport: "Brandon Aiyuk has no guaranteed money left because he stopped showing up for rehab last year."
The 49ers essentially can wait until Week 1.
The Commanders probably don't want to wait that long to figure out if they'll get Aiyuk.
Does that push them into a trade for him? Or does it mean they simply will forget about trying to bring him aboard.
The Commanders need to support Jayden Daniels, but Aiyuk might just have too much drama involved. Besides, this waiting game makes everything tricky.
For now, it's clear the 49ers are in control. The Commanders, Aiyuk and any other interested team simply have to wait until San Francisco allows this to move forward.
