NBA fans are reeling after learning Memphis Grizzliesplayer Brandon Clarke has died. He was 29. Though most of the details about Clarke’s gut-wrenching death have been kept private, authorities shared that they were investigating his passing as a potential overdose.
Brandon Clarke was the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, being selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder before being traded to the Grizzlies in July of that year. In recent years, the Gonzaga alum experienced devastating injuries, limiting his action between the 2022 and 2025 seasons.

Weeks ago, Clarke made headlines after reports revealed he had been arrested on charges of leading police on a traffic chase through parts of Arkansas.

Per NBC 4, Clarke’s unfortunate death is being investigated as a possible overdose; however, an official autopsy will be used to determine the cause of Clarke’s passing.

Clarke’s death was confirmed by his sports agency, Priority Sports, on May 12. In the post, the agency said Clarke was “loved” by the entire team, calling him the “gentlest soul.”
“Our hearts are so broken as we think about his mom, Whitney, his entire family, and all of his friends and teammates,” the post continued.
The sports agency praised Clarke as “the most supportive friend,” touching on his unique ability to positively impact those around him.
The Grizzlies, meanwhile, issued their own statement, sharing that they were “heartbroken” by Clarke’s “tragic” death.
“Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an ever better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the post read.

Clarke Was Arrested A Month Ago And Booked Into An Arkansas Jail

In addition to that, the Cross County Sheriff’s Department added fleeing and exceeding the speed limit to the list of charges, per the Associated Press.

According to a previous report from The Blast, former Arizona Cardinals player Rondale Moore died of a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound in February 2026. He was 25.
Like Clarke, Moore suffered a series of injuries, forcing him to be sidelined several times throughout his short career.
The last team Moore played for, the Minnesota Vikings, said the organization was “deeply saddened” by the athlete’s death.
“We have also been in communication with our players, coaches, and staff, and will make counseling and emotional support resources available to anyone in need,” their statement read.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell also opened up about Moore’s passing, highlighting the impact the young star had on him and the rest of their team.
“While Rondale had been a member of the Vikings for a short time, he was someone we came to know well and care about deeply. He was a humble, soft-spoken and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots,” he said.
