The perpetrator was arrested, and the mayor said the motivation for the attack was not yet clear. Police said a car in the Grimmaische Strasse area hit several people before driving off. The driver was arrested and “there is currently no further danger emanating from him,” police said .

Local media reported that a damaged Volkswagen SUV with a person on top of the vehicle was seen speeding in a pedestrian zone. Emergency services declared a mass casualty incident and police are investigating. Police are asking locals to keep emergency routes clear and follow instructions of first responders at the scene.

Axel Schuh, the city’s fire service director, said that at least two people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals. He added that about 20 additional people were “affected,” but he did not elaborate.

Major shopping area

Grimmaische Strasse leads into Leipzig’s main shopping area. The city, southwest of Berlin, is one of Germany’s largest, with a population of more than 630,000 people.

A witness says he was shocked by the incident.

“I’m still completely shocked,” they told Germany’s FOCUS online. “From inside the shop, I saw a car speed through. People were run over. That’s all I saw; then it drove out of my sight. The car was going at high speed; it was a larger vehicle. Now the street is full of ambulances and police.”

This is a developing story. More to come.
