The Golden State Warriors’ free agent options won’t be as enticing as their trade possibilities.
Although the star power won’t be the same, the Dubs could still find valuable FA assets that could provide meaningful minutes for the franchise in 2026-27 (and of course, the Dubs will do their homework on the trade market).
While he tends to suffer untimely injuries, Blue Man Hoop’s Peter O’Keefe thinks that a former Boston Celtics fan-favorite center is a contributor worth targeting this summer.
“Robert Williams III might be a perfect free agency target for the Warriors,” O’Keefe wrote Wednesday.
“After averaging 9.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks through the first four games, Williams was again one of Portland's better players as the series came to a close with a 114-95 defeat.”
Williams had 11 points, seven rebounds, an assist, and a block in 17 minutes off the bench, though his 5-of-10 shooting was less efficient than the over 70% he shot from the floor during the first four games of the series. This makes Williams an incredibly interesting free agent to monitor this summer.”
It didn’t take long for Celtics fans to embrace Williams early in his career. Despite being undersized at the center position (6-foot-9), Williams compensated by serving as an energy buzzer at both ends with pogo stick-like vertical athleticism.
The 2021-22 campaign was Williams’ best with the Celtics, as he contributed 10.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks on a Boston squad that reached the NBA Finals.
The Texas A&M product has experienced injury troubles since then, but he’s still a serviceable two-way weapon when healthy. The Dubs probably won’t prioritize signing Williams in the offseason, but they shouldn’t dismiss the idea, especially given Kristaps Porzingis’ potential departure from the Bay.
