No mention has been made as to where in the country the tragic attack took place.
Franck was admitted to intensive care, but died on 16 April due to the severity of his injuries.
Fundraising campaign
Anderson shared the news while appealing for support for Franck’s two children, Alex (18) and Savannah (16), who are now left without their father.
A BackaBuddy fundraising campaign has been launched to assist the family, with donations intended to support the children’s education, care, and long-term needs.
The initiative has already attracted significant public support, reaching close to three-quarters of its target within a short period.
The campaign has a stated aim of raising R750 000. As at the time of publishing, R592 716 has been raised from 134 donors.
Devoted father
In a social media statement, Anderson described his cousin as a devoted father and said the family was devastated by the sudden loss.
He also recalled Franck’s presence during his run to the Wimbledon final in 2018 as a personal and meaningful memory.
Anderson, 39, reached a career-high of No 5 in the world in July 2018, the first South African to be ranked in the Top 5 since Kevin Curren was No 5 in September 1985.
Anderson retired on 3 May 2022 at the age of 35, but announced his comeback in July 2023 – which lasted a matter of months.
Home invasions in South Africa
Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances of the attack.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about violent crime and home invasions in South Africa, which have continued to draw public attention and calls for stronger safety interventions.
The family has asked for privacy as they grieve, while continuing efforts to secure financial support for the children’s future.
