Police say the search is on for an American woman missing in the Bahamas since early Saturday night.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the missing woman’s husband reported she had the keys to the vessel when she fell overboard.

Authorities said the husband relayed to them that when his wife went into the water, the engine of the dinghy shut off and he had to paddle the eight-foot, hard-bottom vessel for hours before reaching the shore early Sunday.

“He lost sight of her,” police said in the statement. “He then paddled the vessel to shore.”

The couple began their excursion around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Police say the husband paddled to Marsh Harbour Boat Yard, arriving at 4 a.m. on Sunday, where he was able to tell someone what happened, who then alerted the cops.

At that point, police officers and members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Hope Town fire officials started to search the surrounding area, reported CBS News .

While the investigation continues, people in the community who may have information are asked to report it to the police or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

In a travel advisory issued in April, the U.S. State Department warned American tourists of potentially deadly boating issues in the Bahamas, saying “boating is not well regulated” on the islands, and “injuries and deaths have occurred.”
