Lehi put together another dominant performance, this time cruising to a 3-set victory over Cedar Valley 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 on Thursday.

This was the Pioneers’ third game in three days so it would have been understandable if they came in a little sluggish and tired, but they were anything but that.

Lehi head coach Kolby Shewell couldn’t help but be pleased with his team’s performance and mentality heading into the match against a hungry Cedar Valley side.

“I was really pleased with the mentality and preparation,” he said. “This is our third game in three days, and the first game this week, we started off really slowly and had to fight back and we had a good game yesterday.

“Today, I didn’t know what I was going to see from the guys, but they came mentally focused. We’ve learned how to prepare them for the game. We didn’t start slow in this game and I like the way that mentally, they were being mentally strong and mentally focused to get the job done.”

Lehi grabbed the momentum early in the match and never surrendered it. The Pioneers won the first set with no problem, and a powerful kill by Ashton Shewell sealed the second set to give his team added momentum and confidence as it headed deeper into the match.

“I liked our confidence on the court, but we weren’t overconfident,” coach Shewell said. “We stayed within ourselves. Our defense is improving every single game, and that’s where we want to be. We want to focus on the defense, and I like the defense we saw today.

“Cedar Valley has some big hitters, and we were able to get some good stops with blocks and then defensively digging them, which has really been our focus.”

Cedar Valley didn’t go away easy and tried everything to make Lehi sweat in the third set, staying within arm’s reach, but Lehi scored three straight points to grab the victory.

While his team had more errors than he would have liked to see, coach Shewell was very pleased with how the group managed its emotions and stayed dialed in, especially in the thirdand deciding set.

“The guys didn’t have a lot of big dips and too big of highs or too big lows,” he said. “They stayed pretty even. When we got down a point or two, we dialed in, got a good pass.

“We were in our system and had plenty of hitting options to go to, and our guys put it away. We just got more momentum throughout the game and then we were able to put it away.”
