In the wake of seeking medical treatment following his car crash and DUI charge last Friday, Tiger Woods has withdrawn his name for consideration for the Ryder’s Cup captaincy.

“The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being,” the PGA of America said in a statement on Wednesday, April 1. “During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers, with sincere hope for his strength, comfort and recovery.”

The statement continued, “Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision.”

Earlier this week, Woods, 50, broke his silence regarding his arrest, which happened after hit the back of a pickup trailer and rolled his SUV on a two-lane road near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla.

Deputies with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office found two hydrocodone pills in his pants pocket, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," Woods wrote in a statement posted on X on Tuesday, March 31. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery."

"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally," Woods continued. "I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."

A Florida judge granted Woods permission to leave the state to undergo treatment outside of the United States, according to court documents obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE on Wednesday, April 1.

Woods' treating physician recommended he seek treatment at a facility out of the country "based upon the Defendant's complex clinical presentation the urgent need for a level of care that cannot safely or effectively be done within the United States," per the documents.

The request to leave the country for treatment was also made due to concerns that the golfer's "privacy has been repeatedly compromised.”

Woods, who is recovering from back surgery and a ruptured Achilles, played competitive golf for the first time since June 2024 last week in his TGL virtual golf league.

At the time, the five-time Masters winner had left open the door that he might play at Augusta, but the tournament’s organizers confirmed he would not be among the field next week in a statement on Tuesday.

“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,” Fred Ridley, Augusta National Golf Club chairman, said in a statement. “Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta.”
