The Boston Red Sox were one of the busiest teams during the offseason. They brought in a bunch of new faces in hopes of being more competitive this year.

They acquired Caleb Durbin in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, and signed Rager Suarez to a five-year deal.

However, many of the new faces have not shown up the way the front office had hoped. They are struggling to start the 2026 season, sitting with a record of 1-5.

Offseason additions are failing to show up early for the Red Sox

While the Red Sox started the new season with a win, they would soon fall flat on their faces. They are now on a four-game losing streak and were recently swept by the Houston Astros

The struggles do not lie with just one person, but the new faces have done little to inspire much hope. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller puts a lot of the blame on players like Suarez, Gray, Contreras, and Durbin.

"The new additions to the starting rotation, Ranger Suarez and Sonny Gray, have a combined ERA of 7.56 after each making one appearance. Meanwhile, the two new additions to the lineup, Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin, are a combined 3-for-38 at the dish with one run scored and one run driven in."

That is not the ideal formula for success, and some of these new players must step up and get it going sooner rather than later. Boston plays in one of the most competitive divisions in all of baseball, and getting out to an early hole could make it nearly impossible to fight for a division title.

Boston needs to come out with a fire lit underneath them, but that may not be enough with two tough series against the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers coming up.
