Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are in the early stages of what could become one of tennis’s defining rivalries, but there’s no bad blood between them.

Unlike some rivalries that have turned sour over time, these two have managed to keep things respectful despite their battles on court.

While they’re not close off the court, they share a mutual respect and drive each other forward. And as much as they compete, there’s no lingering animosity between them.

After his win over Sinner in Miami, Alcaraz took a moment to acknowledge that respect with a simple message: “It was a tough match. I’m sure we will play more matches like this.”

Alcaraz didn’t have much riding on the Sunshine swing, having fallen in the Indian Wells semi-finals before an early upset in Miami.

So seeing Sinner complete the Sunshine Double probably didn’t sting much from a personal standpoint.

Some might have expected Alcaraz to feel a bit envious, given it’s a feat he hasn’t ticked off yet. But instead, he posted on his Instagram story: “Congratulations @janniksin and team for winning the Sunshine Double!”

He didn’t need to say anything publicly, but chose to anyway. It shows he can appreciate Sinner’s successes while still wanting to get the better of him whenever they meet.

How close is Jannik Sinner to Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP rankings?

The new ATP top ten, published after Miami, didn’t feature any direct movement between the pair, but they are now closer than ever in points.

What could be more concerning for the current world number one is that he has over 4,000 ranking points to defend before Roland Garros, while Sinner has just 1,950 to protect.

The Italian trails Alcaraz by only 1,190 points and is a strong favourite to surpass him in the coming months.
