Could Texas A&M star freshman infielder take the mound to add depth?

Texas A&M (17-3, 1-2 SEC) took care of Texas State 9-6 during Tuesday's midweek matchup, and after going 1-2 against Oklahoma on the road to open SEC play, the Aggies will now host Georgia for a three game series in Blue Bell Park, looking to enter next week with a winning record in confefence play.

However, the Aggies will now be without senior reliever Josh Stewart, who, after sustaining an injury against Oklahoma last Friday, did not return to the mound, leading to second-year head coach Michael Earley revealing that the former Texas transfer will miss the remainder of the year with an unspecified injury.

After losing sophomore Caden McCoy before the 2026 season began, Texas A&M's pitching depth was already an issue, but thanks to strong performances from starters Shane Sdao, Weston Moss, and Aiden Sims, the rise of junior pitcher Clayton Freshcorn has allowed Earley and pitching coach Jason Kelly to rely on fewer arms until SEC play began.

After Stewart's injury, combined with Aiden Sims worst performance of the year on Sunday, Texas A&M's pitching depth was challenged for the first time all year, and knowing that Stewart will be out the rest of the year, D1 Baseball editor Kendall Rogers posed an interesting question.

Texas A&M's freshman duo, consisting of third baseman Nico Partida and shortstop Boston Kellner, has been nothing short of incredible this season, outright earning starting jobs this offseason, excelling at the plate, and improving on defense week after week.

While Kellner is strictly an infielder, Partida entered the program as a star pitcher, earning a 22-1 career record on the mound and logging a 0.70 ERA and .176 BAA (batting average against) during his final high school season. Two-way players, even in today's game, are not uncommon, and while Partida's MLB future is likely at shortstop or second base, Earley should consider utilizing his arm to add more depth at reliever.
