Former Packers CB Nate Hobbs finds a new home

Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs has found a new home during the first week of free agency. Released by the Packers on Wednesday, Hobbs is now signing a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million with the San Francisco 49ers, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

He landed on his feet quickly all things considered.

Hobbs lasted just one season into a four-year, $48 million deal signed with the Packers last March. He was released before the team had to pay his $6.5 million roster bonus this week.

Instead of learning Jonathan Gannon's new defense in Green Bay, Hobbs will go to San Francisco to play for new 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. In 2025, the 49ers played Upton Stout for over 500 snaps in the slot, so it's possible Hobbs will have a path to being a slot defender in San Francisco in 2026.

Hobbs will need a bounce back on the injury front in 2026. He suffered three different knee injuries in 2025, including one early in training camp requiring surgery, and ended up playing in only 11 games. He was paid $18.2 million by the Packers for only 358 total snaps.

Per PFF, Hobbs allowed 17 catches on 25 targets into his coverage for 239 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. His passer rating allowed when targeted was 125.3.

Hobbs ended up playing more than 20 snaps in just six games for the Packers.

The Packers are not done with Hobbs quite yet. He was released with a post-June 1st designation, so his cap number remains on the books until that date. By June 2nd, the Packers will clear almost $9 million off the cap, while allowing $4 million in dead money to hit the cap in 2026 and another $8 million in 2027.

The Packers are not scheduled to face Hobbs and the 49ers in 2026.
