Bulldog girls repeat as section champs, boys lose in finals to Notre Dame

Danielle Ennist scored a game-high 20 points as top seeded Delaware Academy won its second straight Section IV Class C girls basketball title with a 54-40 win over No. 2 Union Springs on Saturday, March 7, at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden.

Delaware Academy, the Midstate Athletic Conference champs, led at halftime, 34-31, then held the Wolves to nine second-half points.

Tyler Abts scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, which also got 10 points from Lexi Davis and nine points from Leah Young.

Delaware Academy (21-2) will play West Canada Valley in the central region game at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 14, at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena in Syracuse.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Notre Dame 68, Delaware Academy 62, OT

Max O’Connor’s buzzer beating three-pointer sent the game to overtime where his top-seeded Crusaders put an end to No. 2 seed Delaware Academy’s season Saturday, March 7, in the Section IV Class C boys basketball finals at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden.

The Bulldogs trailed at halftime, 30-27, and by as many as nine in the second half, before making a fourth-quarter run to take the lead. However, Notre Dame answered in the final minutes of regulation.

In overtime, the Crusaders outscored the Bulldogs, 10-4.

Rocco Sayers scored a game-high 23 points to lead Notre Dame, which also got 14 points from O’Connor, 11 points from Finn Schweizer and 10 points from Menelik Jenkins.

Lucas Nealis scored 15 points to the Bulldogs, which also got 14 points from Teddy Kelsh and 11 points each from Benny Schnabel and John Wilson.

Delaware Academy, the Midstate Athletic Conference champs, end their season at 19-4.

Notre Dame (18-4) will play Cooperstown in the central region game at 5 p.m., Sunday, March 15, at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena in Syracuse.
