Rory McIlroy's Augusta National visit reveals Champions Locker mates

ORLANDO, Fla. – Rory McIlroy paid a visit to Augusta National Golf Club last week with his father, Gerry, and became reacquainted with the 7-iron he used for one of his best shots of the 2025 Masters that is on display in the Champions Locker Room. That isn’t all that McIlroy found there. He also learned that he will be sharing lockers with Ben Hogan, the 1951 and 1953 winner, and Raymond Floyd, who slipped into his Green Jacket in 1976.

McIlroy said at the Genesis Invitational two weeks ago that he was going to play with his dad and Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley. On Friday, he noted that it was the first time his dad has been to the course since his victory. Gerry was on the other side of the pond that week moving into a new home and missed seeing his son complete the career Grand Slam in person.

McIlroy shared that he dropped a ball in the left fairway on No. 15, grabbed his current 7-iron and pictured hitting a rope-hook to the green at the par 5 affectionately known as Firethorn.

“I hit the shot on 15 again, just to replicate it,” McIlroy said.

And how did it come out?

“I nearly pitched it in the hole. It was actually a better shot than I hit in the tournament. It was actually unbelievable, I wish I could have got it on camera,” McIlroy said. “Like literally, you know, the pitch mark was that (close) from the hole, and just sort of went to the back edge of the green."

Earlier this year at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he confirmed that his manager had given Augusta National the TaylorMade Rors prototype 7-iron he had used for the shot, which hooked a good 25-30 yards around Georgia pines to about 6 feet. McIlroy said it already was on display in the Champions Locker.

There isn’t enough room for every past champion to have his own locker so historically the club has doubled and now tripled them up. Jordan Spieth is paired with Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods with Jack Burke, Jr. McIlroy said that he was excited to see what past champions he would share with and was pleased to see a legend like Hogan and Floyd, who he said has been a good friend to him over the years.

McIlroy added that he had been to the club in December to work on a documentary on his victory that is being produced in conjunction with Augusta National, and when he looked in his locker there was a note from Jack Nicklaus, who had been there a week or so before. “It said, ‘Welcome to the club,’ ” McIlroy said.

How good is that?
