Florida coach Jon Sumrall expected a routine offseason photo shoot inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. However, he got way more than he bargained for and came face-to-face with a seven-foot alligator.

Sumrall is getting used to The Swamp, but doesn't like the natural predators. The viral moment unfolded over the weekend when Sumrall participated in a promotional shoot featuring a live gator named Helena, brought in from a nearby farm.

According to Sumrall, the surprise encounter nearly caught him completely off guard. He told On3’s JD PicKell that he didn’t even know the plan until his wife mentioned it the day before.

“She somehow found out from either my administrative team or my operations team before I did,” Sumrall said. “She’s like, ‘Hey, you know you’re gonna see an alligator tomorrow.’ I’m like, ‘What? What are you talking about?’”

Sumrall initially assumed the animal would be a baby gator. Instead, he was introduced to Helena, who was Shaq sized on the ground.

“I’m like, ‘Hang on, how many feet?’” Sumrall said. “‘I’m supposed to get how close?’”

The photo shoot was tame, but still had Sumrall shook. The video shared by Florida football showed the alligator snapping its head back and hissing toward Sumrall, prompting him to think twice about the encounter.

“When that alligator decided it was going to hiss and snap real fast, it let me know, ‘Hey, don’t mess with me,’” Sumrall said.

Maybe Helena can stay on the sidelines during games like UGA at Georgia. If that doesn't do fire things up, a Gator crawl to the 50-yard line before the game would be epic. It would at least create for an interesting storyline.

Despite the scare, Sumrall called the moment humbling and impressive, saying Florida’s live mascot is “pretty powerful” to see up close.
