Brandel Chamblee once shared a story about a surprising conversation he had with Anthony Kim long before the golfer’s professional career began.

Kim was five shots off the lead heading into the final round but stormed back to win in stunning fashion. At 40 years old, it was another remarkable moment in a life that often feels like it was made for Hollywood.

After spending over a decade away from golf, his journey back to the sport wasn’t straightforward. But when he finally returned and signed with LIV Golf in 2024, it felt like something many fans had been waiting to see.

Kim arrived on the PGA Tour with plenty of confidence and seemed destined for stardom. Not many players could match his presence or boldness at that time, which made him hard to ignore even early on.

It appears that self-belief was there from the start. During an appearance on Dan on Golf, Chamblee shared a story about how Kim surprised him during their first encounter.

“Without question I think it was [LIV’s biggest moment]. I think everybody loves an underdog story, and you’d be hard pressed to find a bigger underdog than him. Addiction, demons, self-sabotage, you name it, he seems to have gone through it all. And when he got out there, he was dead last,” he said.

“There’s always been this fascination with him because he had a bravado about him. He used to work with the same coach that I worked with, Adam Schriber. I remember being on the range once, hitting balls at PGA West on the back of the range with Adam, and Adam said to me – I think he was 11 or 12 at the time – ‘you’ve got to come watch this little kid that I’m working with’. And I went over and I stood behind him and he hit several tee shots, and he turned around and said: ‘Who’s going to beat me?’”

How Anthony Kim responded to his first PGA Tour win in 2008

There are plenty of showmen over the years who have struggled once they are out of the spotlight. But Kim looked to be born to be an entertainer when he arrived on the PGA Tour.

He won his first title at the 2008 Wachovia Championship as he finished five shots clear of Ben Curtis, who would join him on that year’s Ryder Cup team.

Remarkably, Kim suggested that he felt incredibly calm during the final round at Quail Hollow.

“I was actually pretty comfortable. I thought I’d have a couple more butterflies in my stomach on the first tee and felt pretty calm and confident about my game, and I was really happy with the way I was thinking out there. I wasn’t getting too far ahead of myself, so I was really comfortable,” he said.

A look back at that day shows just how different his personality is compared to most top golfers. From a young age, Kim had never been short of self-belief, but it wasn’t until 2024 that he found true inner peace.
