The province has experienced relatively cool to warm conditions since late February, with afternoon showers becoming a regular feature in many areas.

The upcoming weather system, however, is expected to intensify, bringing heavier rainfall and potentially severe thunderstorms.

According to SAWS, the storms may be accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail. These conditions raise the risk of localised flooding, fallen trees and possible damage to infrastructure, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Pretoria outlook

In Pretoria, temperatures are expected to remain in the low to mid-20s throughout the week. On Monday, the capital is forecast to reach a maximum of 24°C, with afternoon showers likely. Rainfall is expected to intensify from Tuesday

Rainfall probabilities are expected to increase as the week progresses, with a 60% chance of rain in several parts of Gauteng. Thunderstorms are forecast to develop mainly in the afternoons and early evenings, a typical pattern during late summer weather systems in the region.

Johannesburg forecast

Johannesburg is also set for unsettled conditions. The SA Weather Service predicts thundershowers on Tuesday, with daytime temperatures reaching around 22°C in many parts of southern Gauteng.

The broader weekly outlook indicates a consistent 60% chance of rain, particularly in the afternoons heading into the evening.

Residents can expect cloudy mornings followed by build-ups of storm clouds later in the day.

Safety advisory

Motorists are urged to exercise caution on the roads, especially during peak traffic hours when heavy downpours could reduce visibility and create slippery driving conditions.

Gauteng residents are also advised to secure loose outdoor items and remain indoors during severe lightning storms and extreme weather conditions.

The SA Weather Service continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates should weather warnings be escalated.
