Maine's MPA Class A and Class B boys hockey championships have reached the final eight in each classification, and the first pucks in the next round will drop Friday night, February 27.

In the Class A quarterfinals, the four matchups will be played at the home ice of the higher-seeded teams, including the No. 1 seed Thornton Academy which will host the co-op team from Bangor/Brewer/Skowhegan/Narraguagus at the Biddeford Ice Arena. The winners of the four quarterfinal matchups will then advance to Tuesday's state semifinals at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

Class B is divided into a North and South Division where the semifinals are the equivalent of Class A's state quarterfinals. But the semifinals in each division will each be held at a central location with the northern teams facing off on Friday and Saturday at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The southern semifinals will be played back-to-back on Saturday at Portland's Troubh Ice Arena.

The Class B South championship will then take place on Tuesday, March 3, at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland while the Class B North championship will be staged the following night at Alfond Arena in Orono.

Then it's back to Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday afternoon for both the Class A and B state championships which will be played back-to-back starting with the Class B title game at 1 p.m.

Maine's top teams headed into the MPA championships

CLASS A

Thornton Academy is the top-ranked team in Maine, ranked No. 16 nationally in the latest MaxPreps rankings, and the boys from Saco are the heavy favorites to win the Class A state title. The Trojans don't figure to be challenged much by the first-year co-op team comprised of students from Bangor/Brewer/Skowhegan/Narraguagus – aka, the Twin City Titans – as the only meeting between them resulted in a 10-0 loss by the newcomers back on December 20.

In fact, only one team has managed to outskate Thornton Academy this season as the Trojans have piled up an impressive 17-1-0 record. The Trojans' only loss came in a 7-4 upset by Class B Messalonskee back on December 6 in the second game of the season.

The first real test for Thornton Academy will likely come in the second round against the winner of No. 5 Falmouth and No. 4 Scarborough. The Trojans went 2-0 in the regular season against both those schools, but only managed to beat Falmouth, 3-2, back on January 3. Scarborough also held up well on defense in a 2-0 loss to the Trojans as recently as February 17, indicating that, at their best, either of the two potential semifinalists could at least challenge the frontrunners.

If the seedings hold, however, Thornton Academy would face the No. 2 seed Cheverus/Yarmouth in the state championship game on March 7. Cheverus/Yarmouth is more than capable of putting up a fight against the Trojans after taking them to overtime in a 4-3 loss back on January 10.

CLASS B

In the Class B ranks, Messalonskee is the No. 1 seed in the North Division, and as noted above, they are the only team to beat the Class A favorites from Thornton Academy this season. It was in convincing fashion, too, by a count of 7-4, and at 15-3, they are the team to beat headed into the Class B semifinals.

They'll take on the co-op team representing students from John Bapst/Hermon/Bangor Christian/Deer Isle-Stonington, a team they split with in the regular-season. The teams played back-to-back contests on January 31 and February 4 with Messalonskee winning the first game 3-2 before the co-op team turned the tables for a 3-1 win of their own. The rubber match will take place Saturday with the winner moving on to the Class B North championship next Wednesday at the University of Maine's Alfond Arena in Orono.

The No. 1 seed in the South division is Gorham/Massabesic, and they figure to have a tougher path to the title against the co-op team from Poland/Leavitt/Gray-NG/Oak Hill. The Gorham squad won both of their regular-season matchups, but both were one-goal affairs earlier this month on February 4 (2-1) and February 14 (3-2).
