Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said Illinois is suffering from a case of "you snooze, you lose" when it comes to the Chicago Bears.

Braun joined the "Pat McAfee Show" at the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday, Feb. 26, expressing confidence that the Bears may truly move to northwest Indiana.

"They came to us. We didn't try to lure them," he said. "They were being told bluntly (by Illinois), 'You've got to build your own stadium. We're not putting any taxpayer dollars into it.' We never got ahead of our skis."

The Bears have been negotiating with Illinois officials for years as they seek to move from Soldier Field along Lake Michigan.

On Thursday, Indiana's legislature sent to Braun a bill that outlines financial incentives and the authority to build a stadium. The team and state officials are looking at an area near Wolf Lake in Hammond.

In Illinois, a House committee has moved forward a bill that would lock in property taxes at the former Arlington Racetrack site in Chicago's northwest suburbs. The Bears own that site.

Braun said Illinois dragged its feet over several years of negotiating with the Bears, who have made a "shared commitment" to seriously consider Indiana.

"It's going to be a lot easier to run a business in Indiana over the next 40 or 50 years than it would be there," Braun said.
