UFC Mexico City’s David Martinez respects ‘legend’ Chito Vera but vows to prove he’s ‘the new blood’

Rising Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) contender David Martinez faces the biggest test of his young Octagon career this weekend (Sat., Feb. 28, 2026) when he meets former title challenger Marlon “Chito” Vera in the co-main event of UFC Mexico City inside Arena CDMX in Mexico.

Just two fights into his UFC tenure, Martinez already sits at No. 10 in the loaded 135-pound rankings. He earned that spot with a statement win over veteranRob Font at Noche UFC 3 last year, announcing himself as a serious player in the division. Now, he draws one of the most battle-tested names on the roster in the 25-fight UFC veteran, Vera.

Despite the magnitude of the matchup — and the pressure of fighting at home — Martinez says he’s embracing the moment.

“Yes, of course — I’m very nervous, but the people of Mexico give me all the energy I need for this fight. It’s the extra that I need for a good performance on Saturday,” Martinez told UFC.com during UFC Mexico City media day. “Really, I was waiting [for this fight] because it makes sense for me. Fighting with Chito Vera in Mexico, in my country, makes sense because he’s a legend in the sport, a legend in Latin America; a legend in Mexico, too. But I am the new blood, a new generation, and it’s a good fight for the people.”

A win would see Martinez leapfrog Vera in the rankings — a milestone he admits adds mental pressure.

“The biggest challenge with this fight is maybe because it’s my first fight with my number in the rankings,” Martinez said. “But it’s just the mind; it’s just a challenge in the mind.”

Known for his durability and always being a tough out, Vera has never been finished, meaning Martinez is preparing for a grueling battle.

“I need to fight with heart because he’s a very strong opponent,” Martinez said. “Enjoy the fight; that’s it. I am ready for three, five, or 10 rounds with Chito Vera.”

Riding a nine-fight win streak, the promotion is clearly investing in Martinez — and Saturday could be his true arrival.
