The awards – handed out by Tripadvisor – are bestowed upon the world’s best beaches, based on high-scoring reviews left by visitors over a 12-month period.

Based on 8 635 reviews, translating to a 4.4 rating, Boulders Beach was awarded the top title.

“Boulders has all the beachy hallmarks: clean sand for lounging, chilly pools for swimming, and boardwalks made for strolling,” per Tripadvisor.

“And then there are the African penguins… that call it home. Catch them on quiet mornings before crowds roll in, and don’t miss the gift shop for kitschy souvenirs.”

Many of the reviewers name the penguins as highlights of their visit to the beach, citing it as a perfect way to get up close and personal with these beautiful birds. That, and it provides a perfect photo opportunity for the holiday album!

THESE BEACHES ALSO MADE WAVES

To clinch the top spot, Boulders Beach beat out pretty solid contenders from around the world.

They include:

2. Isola Bella – Sicily, Italy
3. Bamburgh Beach – Bamburgh, England
4. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – Empire, Michigan, United States of America
5. Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses – Barreirinhas, Brazil
6. Anakena Beach – Easter Island, Chile
7. Wai’anapanapa State Park – Maui, Hawaii
8. Hopewell Rocks – Hopewell Cape, Canada
9. Bahía Bioluminiscente – Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico
10. Hot Water Beach – Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand

These beaches each boast stunning vistas and geographical features. Of course, they probably would have scored higher if they had penguins. (Just kidding… sort of!)
