UFC newcomer Carol Foro announces positive drug test, debut scrapped

UFC strawweight Carol Foro and her team have announced a drug test failure, which prompted the cancellation of an upcoming fight.

Foro (9-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) was set for her promotional debut against Stephanie Luciano at UFC Fight Night 271. However, due to an out-of-competition test that returned a positive result, the UFC will wait until the situation is fully resolved before allowing her to compete.

According to Foro's team, the positive test conducted on Jan. 6 returned positive for a diuretic that was not on the approved substance list, yet it was not taken intentionally. The 28-year-old Dana White's Contender Series signee says she is working closely with Drug Free Sport International to identify the source of the substance. Due to the ongoing investigation, it is unclear for how long Foro may be suspended.

"Athlete Carol Foro and her team would like to inform the public that the athlete tested positive for a type of diuretic in an out-of-competition test conducted on January 6th.

From the very beginning, Carol has been in direct and constant communication with Drug Free Sport International (DFSI) and the UFC, fully cooperating to clarify the facts and conduct the procedure through the appropriate channels.

Carol did not use the diuretic consciously or intentionally. At the same time, we recognize that the quantities indicated in the result are not compatible with a typical scenario of accidental contamination in trace amounts, which reinforces the need for a complete and thorough technical investigation.

Our main line of investigation at this time is that the substance may have originated from a supplement used by the athlete—a product that supposedly consisted only of natural herbs, but which likely contained additional ingredients not listed on the label (adulterated/mislabeled product).

As part of this verification, the supplement has already been sent to the United States, where it will undergo laboratory analysis to verify its composition and traceability.

Due to the time required to complete the supplement analysis and properly assess the case, the UFC deemed it appropriate to remove Carol from her next fight until the process is resolved.

We reaffirm the athlete's and the entire team's commitment to clean sport, respect for regulations, and responsible transparency—without compromising the integrity of the ongoing process.

Until the investigations and formal procedures are concluded, we will not comment on additional details that may interfere with the technical analysis and due process. We will continue to cooperate with the competent authorities so that all facts are accurately clarified."
